Are you feeding algae in your pool?

You keep chlorine in your pool, you shock it weekly, and still…..you see algae!!  What’s going on?!?!?   There’s a good chance that you have been unknowingly providing a food source which has, in turn, helped algae thrive in your pool.

Phosphates are introduced into your pool by way of vegetation, fertilizers, lawn clippings, leaves, bugs and other debris.  Even with chlorine levels within range (between 1-4 ppm), phosphates can be present.  These phosphates are a food source for algae.  With phosphates in the water, algae can thrive.  Remove the phosphates, and algae cannot grow.

Do you have phosphates?

Finding out if phosphates are in your swimming pool water is easy.  Simply bring in a water test and we can run a computerized analysis.  The test is available at no cost (providing you have bought a chemical with us) and it takes just a few minutes.  The test will give us the precise levels of chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium and other important factors, including phosphate levels.

How do I remove phosphates?

Once we have an accurate reading of your phosphates, we can recommend the best product and dosage.  Phosphates typically clear up fairly quickly – usually within a few doses of a phosphate remover.  It’s also a good idea to apply a maintenance dose of the same product to help prevent the problem from reoccurring.

Are phosphates the only thing that causes algae?

No.  Other causes of algae include:

  1. Low chlorine levels
  2. Poor circulation
  3. Filter sand needs changes
  4. Over stabilization
  5. Poor housekeeping
  6. High pH levels
